FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE WITH NEWBORNS?
A: I've specialized in newborns since I started photography about 10 years ago, over this time I have photographed hundreds of newborns and I’m a mother of 4 boys myself. I'm very passionate about my job and newborn safety. Because of this I've invested in several newborn workshops taught by some of the most well known and respected newborn photographers in the industry. These workshops have been in person group workshops as well as a private 1:1 workshop. Workshops cover newborn safety extensively.(in person workshops are very different than online workshops, I have hands on training and a clear understanding of how/why to pose a baby safely)
Q: DO YOU HAVE A STUDIO SPACE
A: I have a studio space located in the new industrial area of Lloydminster. Once you book your session I will send a PDF of session instructions which also includes my studio address.
Q: DO YOU OFFER SESSIONS FOR OLDER BABIES?
A: Yes! After the newborn stage of approx. 5-18 days I book 4 month to one year sessions. All newborn clients receive 10% off milestone bookings.
Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BOOK MY NEWBORN PHOTOS?
A: The best time to book is before baby arrives! I suggest contacting me after the first trimester. I do accept limited bookings each month so I have the flexibility in my schedule when baby arrives. I book based on due date and once baby arrives I have clients contact me to set up the actual session date/time.
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO PHOTOGRAPH MY NEWBORN?
A: The best age to photograph a newborn is between 5-14 days following birth. During this time frame babies are more likely to sleep soundly when being re positioned, and they still have that beautiful baby “curl” we all love to see in photos!
Q: WHAT IF MY BABY IS OLDER THAN 18 DAYS AND I WANT TO BOOK A SESSION?
A: If your little one was born premature, we can often stretch this window of time later than if your baby was born at full gestation.
If your baby was not born premature, but is over 18 days old please contact me and we can discuss if newborn portrait photography is a good fit for you and your baby.
Babies over the age of two weeks have more awake time, wake much easier when being repositioned, and generally don’t sleep as soundly as their “younger” counterparts. Older newborns would best be booked for a mini session and may end up needing to be wrapped the majority of session.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS ONCE I DECIDE I WANT TO BOOK A NEWBORN SESSION?
A: Once you have decided to book a session the non-refundable non-transferable deposit ($200+gst) is required to secure your booking. At that time, I will add you to my schedule approximately 7 days post your due date and send you an information package with information on how to prepare for your newborn session. Once baby arrives, I ask that you contact me as soon as you are able so we can find a day that works for you between that 5-16 day window. If you or your baby is ill for any reason and we can not complete session in that time-framesession will be completed as soon as yourself/baby is healthy enough.
***please note: In the unfortunate event of a loss of pregnancy a full refund would be given.
Q: DO YOU OFFER SESSIONS ON WEEKENDS?
A: No, sorry. I work Monday to Friday while my children are in school. All newborn sessions start at either 9:30 or 10:30 am. There may be the odd time I can accommodate a weekend session it's just not an available option all the time as I share a studio with another photographer and she has the weekends.
Q: HOW LONG IS A NEWBORN SESSION?
A: A typical full newborn session can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. The average session is approx. 3 hours. This allows for time to nurse and soothe baby if needed. I provide a warm sleepy environment for session and following preparation instructions well can greatly reduce session time. If you are booking a newborn mini session we do less set ups and session is max 1 hour. I expect newborn mini clients will have baby fed upon arrival so that we can make the most of our 1 hour time slot.
Q: DO I NEED TO BRING ANY PROPS OR DO YOU SUPPLY THEM?
A: Because I specialize in newborn to first year I supply all the props for use during sessions. I have tons of headbands, hats, props, wraps, blankets etc. available for use during session. All the vendors I purchase from are quality vendors and most specialize in providing props for Newborn photographers. The props I provide/use are keeping with my personal style as a photographer. Newborns are perfect – just as they are, and I choose to highlight their natural beauty in the images I capture. I don’t use a lot of over the top props, as I feel that this distracts from the perfectness that is your new little one! My style is simple and timeless. (ie. no jersey's, helmets etc.)
PLEASE BE SURE TO VIEW MY WORK AND MAKE SURE MY STYLE IS THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU. MY GOAL IS TO PROVIDE TIMELESS PHOTOS THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL TREASURE FOR YEARS TO COME. .
Q: I HAVE OLDER CHILDREN WHO I WOULD LIKE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH MY NEWBORN CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE THIS?
A: Yes, with full newborn sessions this is an option. These photos are done at the beginning of the session and someone must be available to take your child/children home following these photos. Children do not tolerate the heat and length of a newborn session, and often become a distraction in the studio. For these reasons siblings must go when they are done with photos. Please keep in mind that although I will attempt sibling poses, this is not the focus of a newborn session. Please do not set expectations high for young children, as they often have difficulty following direction and are uncomfortable holding their new sibling. Many siblings are just not sure of their new sister or brother and are still adjusting to a new family dynamic. Sibling photos are not offered with newborn mini sessions.
Q: I WOULD LIKE TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH MY NEWBORN IS THIS POSSIBLE?
A: Yes with full newborn sessions. I am always happy to do posing with mom/baby, dad/baby, as well as mom/dad/baby. Please let me know prior to the session and see your newborn information package for information on how to prepare for session. Mini newborn sessions do not include parent or sibling.
Q: I HAVE AN OLDER CHILD AND/OR GRANDPARENTS AND I WOULD LIKE FAMILY PHOTOS DONE WITH MY NEWBORN SESSION. IS THIS POSSIBLE?
A: Yes we can attempt a quick family photo, again this depends on how siblings co-operate and I can never guarantee this photo will happen because of that. This option is not available for newborn mini sessions.
Q: HOW SOON WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE MY PHOTOS?
A: I aim for a turn around time of 1 week for your proofing gallery. You will receive an e-mail from me giving you access to a password protected online gallery. This gallery will stay active for five days. Once you have chosen your images from your proofing gallery the final images will be fully edited with a turn around time of approx. 2 weeks.
Q: WHAT IS A PROOFING GALLERY?
A: A proofing gallery is the unedited photos I select from your session for you to choose your final images.I do show a few photos edited so that you can have a better idea of how the final photos will look, the edited photos are shown with the black and white. The client then chooses which images they would like with their package and I would complete the editing on those files giving them in both color and black and white.
Q: DO I RECEIVE DIGITAL FILES OR PRINTS WITH SESSIONS?
A: All my sessions include the full resolutions files on USB with printing rights (these files are chosen from a client proofing gallery) I offer professional printing if the client chooses, however clients may print their photos at any consumer lab themselves as well.
